For the past three years, the Optimist Club has donated thousands of dollars in food throughout the Methacton School District to help feed economically disadvantaged students. Today, the program has grown so much and is supported by many other organizations, that it has become fully funded for the new future. As a result, the

Optimist Club started Project Backpack.

In our first year, during the last quarter of 2018, Project Backpack managed to support and feed 15 students weekly in Norristown Middle School. In September of 2018, the club has raised enough funds to exponentially grow, and we are now feeding 30 children. This September 2019, we will increase the number of children we will feed to 40!

 

Our members purchase the foods, including milk, cereal, crackers, macaroni and cheese, fruit and other nutritious and easy to prepare meals/snacks. They pack each individual bag for the participating students. The school anonymously delivers the bags each Friday to the participating students. This assures that the child has food to sustain them over the weekend.

We are looking for donations from companies, small businesses and individuals who share our commitment to feed children in Lower Providence and our immediate surrounding neighborhoods.
